Dive into the history of the Buffalo Soldiers and other accounts of Black history with retired NPS ranger Rik Penn. Originally formed in 1866, the “Buffalo Soldiers” moniker came to refer to the soldiers in four all-black U.S. Army units: the 9th Cavalry Regiment, the 10th Cavalry Regiment, the 24th Infantry Regiment, and the 25th Infantry Regiment. We'll begin the presentation inside the Presidio Visitor Center and end with a short walk around the Main Post to see some of the buildings where these brave soldiers lived and served their country.  Along the way, we'll explore the reasons why they became some of the very first "park rangers," the constant moral dilemma these soldiers faced, and the inspiration behind Bob Marley's famous song about them.
