Many residents of the Bayview and Visitacion Valley neighborhoods of San Francisco have never been in a forest — let alone a national park, according to Francisco Ferrer, a program coordinator for Edgewood Center for Children and Families (a nonprofit that helps youth and their families with mental and behavioral health issues). Five years ago, Edgewood began partnering with the Parks Conservancy, Presidio Trust, and the National Park Service to bring their community--the Bayview and Visitacion Valley neighborhoods--to the Golden Gate National Recreation Area on guided shuttle trips. Since then, hundreds have found comfort, joy, and fun at Crissy Field and other sites.
