One hundred years ago on this date (Aug. 25), President Woodrow Wilson signed the Organic Act that created the National Park Service (NPS)—the federal agency under the Department of the Interior trusted with the preservation of America’s most treasured places.
During the NPS Centennial celebrations throughout 2016, the Parks Conservancy has helped connect the national parks with new audiences and cultivate the next generation of park stewards through a variety of innovative programs, including:
- Junior Ranger Jamboree community celebration at Crissy Field
- Park-themed summer reading program in partnership with the San Francisco Public Library
- Free shuttles connecting branches of the San Francisco Public Library in underserved neighborhoods with nearby national park sites
- Park “trailheads” and ranger programs at San Francisco Public Library locations
- Little Free Libraries at 10 sites in the Golden Gate National Parks
- Packing the Parks—a once-in-a-lifetime backpacking trip across the Golden Gate National Parks for 70 Bay Area youth
