Have you ever wondered how San Francisco looked like before it became a sprawling city and urban center? Take a walk with the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy in Fort Funston and experience the natural splendor of the “Great Dune Waste” that used to cover most of the peninsula of San Francisco. This walk will focus on sharing general knowledge of sand dune environments and the local plants and animals that live in them, the environmental services they provide, as well as how we at the Conservancy manage and maintain these areas. Our walk will be 2.5 hours long and will be moderate in activity; including some uneven terrain, briefly walking in sand, and moderate exposure to the sun and weather. We will be starting from Fort Funston’s Main Parking Lot near the Nike Missile site adjacent to the native plant nursery and walking through various dune environments working inland towards the sea.
