"Because of the sacrifices that were made at Alcatraz Island, we no longer have to act out of desperation. The fact that I’m standing here today, is a testament to that fact. I am here. We are here. And we are not going anywhere." - Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland.
In November 2021 we helped our friends at the National Park Service welcome Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland to Alcatraz Island and the Golden Gate National Parks. Secretary Haaland met with the Indians of All Tribes to mark the 52nd anniversary of the Occupation of Alcatraz Island, a key milestone in the history of the island, our country, and the broader Native American civil rights movement.
Secretary Haaland, the first Native American person to serve in the U.S. Cabinet, spoke on progress made by Indigenous communities since the 1969 Occupation, and challenges that remain. She also toured sites in the parks that will benefit from key infrastructure investments and met with staff.
