Join us on Mt. Tam for a naturalist adventure! A bioblitz is a quick, intense survey of the species present. It’s part nature walk, part open-ended treasure hunt, and lots of joyful, careful observation. Our adventure will start with a quick how-to and an introduction to lichens and forests. We will then hike a short-to-moderate distance to our survey location where we will photograph and collect lichens—and other forest friends!—in small groups. After the survey, participants will gather again in an outdoor setting to share finds and identify lichens.
Registration is required for all participants 2+ years of age. If registration is full, complete the form and you will be automatically added to the waiting list. People on the waiting list will be notified if a spot becomes available.
Date and time: Friday, November 15, 2024, 1:00 pm-4:00 pm
Meeting location: Rock Spring Trailhead. Intersection of Pantoll Rd. & W Ridgecrest Blvd. on Mt. Tam. Parking is free.
About the group: Everyone is welcome! This bioblitz will involve a group of nature-curious folks of all ages and experience levels. Bioblitz facilitators will bring expertise about different aspects of Mt. Tam’s biodiversity and will provide coaching on identification and using iNaturalist.
Ease of Access, Terrain Characteristics, & Creature Comforts: This event includes a hike of up to 3.5 miles (mostly flat), suitable for many age groups including children. This includes traveling over unpaved, varied terrain with inclines and uneven surface. Participants will have the option to spend some time off-trail, so consider hiking poles. Hazards include poison oak, ticks, and cold weather, so bring sturdy shoes, long pants, and a warm jacket & hat. Portable restrooms and water will be available at the meeting location. Please bring your own snacks, water bottle, and a backpack.
The terrain is suitable for:
Weather & Cancellations: We will bioblitz in light rain. However, we may need to cancel in the event of adverse weather conditions, unhealthy air quality, or other unforeseen circumstances. In the case of cancellation, participants will be informed via email.
Pets: Although we love dogs and they are allowed on our bioblitz route, we do not recommend bringing dogs due to the anticipated group size.
