Fort Funston began its history as San Francisco’s most remote (some said desolate) defense post in 1900. From World War I to the Cold War, the post featured barracks, massive gun emplacements, trenches, antiaircraft guns, and NIKE missiles that protected the southern approach to San Francisco Bay. Join park historian John Martini on an exploration of Fort Funston and the remains of many of these fortifications lie buried beneath the city’s last large expanse of natural dunes. Meet in the paved parking lot near the hang glider launch site. This will be a dog friendly event!
Difficulty: Moderate. Includes walking across unpaved, sandy areas.
