Celebrate Earth Day by joining one of the many volunteer projects in the Golden Gate National Parks. From beach cleanups to trail maintenance, there is something for everyone. Bring yourself, your friends, and family! 

This is a rain or shine event. Please dress appropriately. Below is the full list of projects available.

Marin

Alta Ave at Oakwood Valley: Habitat Restoration
Date: Saturday, April 20

Help the endangered Mission blue butterfly by restoring grasslands.
Time: 10 am–1 pm
Age requirement: Volunteers ages 10 and up are welcome. Adult chaperones required for youth under the age of 15.

Rodeo Valley in the Marin Headlands: Habitat Restoration
Date: Sunday, April 21

Join the park team in roving the hillsides looking for French broom while admiring sweeping views and wildflowers. 
Time: 9:30 am–12:30 pm
Age requirement: Volunteers ages 10 and up are welcome. Adult chaperones required for youth under the age of 15.

Easkoot Creek at Stinson Beach: Habitat Restoration
Date: Sunday, April 21

Tackle Cape ivy and other weedy infestations to restore stream-side Steelhead trout habitat. 
Time: 9:30 am–12:30 pm (Enjoy the work? Volunteers also have the option to stay until 2:30pm!)
Age requirement: Volunteers ages 10 and up are welcome. Adult chaperones required for youth under the age of 15.

Date: Saturday, April 20

Time: 9 am–1 pm
Age requirement: Family-friendly, all ages are welcome. Adult chaperones required for youth under the age of 15.

Stinson Beach: Restore and Create
Date: Saturday, April 20

Enjoy a day at the beach while helping to care for our beautiful coastline in Marin and creating temporary art with nature.
Time: 10 am–3 pm
Age requirement: Family-friendly, volunteers of all ages are welcome. Adult chaperones required for youth under the age of 15.

San Francisco

Lands End/West Fort Miley: Landscaping and Site Maintenance
Date: Saturday, April 20

Unearth historic Battery Chester!  The park team will be focusing on painting, vegetation removal, litter collection, and reburishing picnic tables for visitors to enjoy in this tucked away area of the park. 
Time: 10 am–1 pm
Age requirement: Volunteers ages 12 and up are welcome. Adult chaperones required for youth under the age of 15.

Black Point Historic Gardens: Gardening and Trail Stewardship
Date: Saturday, April 20

Discover the historic gardens and pathways of Black Point in Fort Mason through gardening and trail projects. 
Time: 9 am–12 pm
Age requirement: Volunteers ages 14 and up are welcome. Adult chaperones required for youth under the age of 15.

Ocean Beach: Beach Cleanup at Stairwell #17
Date: Saturday, April 20

Help make the San Francisco coast safer for wildlife and visitors by cleaning up Ocean Beach. 
Time: 10 am–12 pm
Age requirement: Family-friendly, all ages are welcome. Adult chaperones required for youth under the age of 15.

San Mateo

Mori Point: Habitat Restoration
Date: Saturday, April 27

Learn about the endangered species and restore habitat to ensure their survival. Pacifica EcoFest Fair immediately follows. 
Age requirement: Family friendly, all ages are welcome. Adult chaperones required for youth under the age of 15.

Age, Skills, What to Bring:

  • Age requirement varies by project. Read our Youth Policy Guidelines (PDF) for youth under the age of 15.

  • Bring your completed Volunteer Agreement Form (PDF). Volunteers under the age of 18 must have the parent/guardian approval section signed.

  • Wear clothes that can get dirty. Long pants and closed-toe shoes are required. Bring layers for changing weather and rain gear if necessary.

  • Bring a personal water bottle and sunscreen.

  • No experience necessary. Training and tools will be provided. Fulfills community service requirements.
